Chapter 1

THE STRUGGLE

Where it all began

Belgaum-ನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪ್ಪನ ಸಣ್ಣ welding shop ಇದೆ. Road side-ನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು shed, welding machine, grinder -- ಅಷ್ಟೇ business. 12th pass ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಾನು ಅಪ್ಪನ shop-ನಲ್ಲೇ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡ್ತಿದ್ದೆ. Gates, grills, window frames welding ಮಾಡೋದು. Daily income Rs 300-500 between.

ನನ್ನ dream ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ದೊಡ್ಡ factory-ಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು ಅಂತ. Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai -- ಈ companies-ನ ads TV-ನಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಿ, ಅವರ factories-ನಲ್ಲಿ robots weld ಮಾಡ್ತಿರೋದು ನೋಡಿ -- "ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು" ಅಂತ ಯೋಚನೆ ಬರ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆದ್ರೆ 12th pass-ಗೆ ಅಂಥ chance ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತೆ?

Chapter 2

THE DISCOVERY

A light in the dark

ಒಂದು ದಿನ ನಮ್ಮ shop-ಗೆ ಒಬ್ಬ customer ಬಂದ. Gate weld ಮಾಡಿಸಕ್ಕೆ. ಅವನು Bangalore-ನಲ್ಲಿ automation company-ಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡ್ತಿದ್ದ. ಅವನ ಜೊತೆ ಮಾತಾಡಿದೆ. EDWartens ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದ. "12th pass ಆದ್ರೂ join ಮಾಡಬಹುದು. PLC, SCADA, Robotics ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಲಿಸ್ತಾರೆ. 14 PLC brands. International certification. Big companies-ನಲ್ಲಿ placement."

THE TRANSFORMATION

Becoming an engineer

ಅಪ್ಪನ ಹತ್ರ ಹೇಳ್ದೆ. ಅಪ್ಪ -- welding shop owner, 12th fail -- ಒಂದು ನಿಮಿಷ ಯೋಚನೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಹೇಳಿದ್ರು -- "ಹೋಗು. ನಿನ್ನ life ಈ shop-ನಲ್ಲಿ waste ಆಗಬಾರದು. ನಾನು fee arrange ಮಾಡ್ತೀನಿ." ಅಪ್ಪ shop-ನ equipment mortgage ಮಾಡಿ course fee arrange ಮಾಡಿದ್ರು.

EDWartens AEP course-ನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ವಾರ -- batch-ನಲ್ಲಿ B.Tech, Diploma holders ಇದ್ರು. ನಾನು 12th pass. ಆದ್ರೆ trainers ಯಾವ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ. Basics-ನಿಂದ ಕಲಿಸಿದ್ರು. ನನ್ನ welding experience ಒಂದು advantage ಆಯ್ತು -- hands-on ಕೆಲಸ ನನಗೆ ಹೊಸದಲ್ಲ. Tools handle ಮಾಡೋದು, wiring ಮಾಡೋದು -- ಇದೆಲ್ಲ ನನಗೆ natural.

THE TRIUMPH

Victory at last

14 PLC brands learn ಮಾಡ್ದೆ -- Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, ABB, Schneider -- ಒಂದೊಂದೂ. VR training-ನಲ್ಲಿ automobile factory simulation-ನಲ್ಲಿ robotic welding line program ಮಾಡ್ದೆ -- welding shop-ನಲ್ಲಿ manual ಆಗಿ ಮಾಡ್ತಿದ್ದ work ಈಗ robots ಮಾಡ್ತವೆ, ಅದನ್ನ program ಮಾಡೋದು ನಾನು! Wartens UK CPD certification exam pass ಮಾಡ್ದೆ.

Tata Motors Pune interview call ಬಂದಾಗ -- ನನ್ನ dream company! Interview-ನಲ್ಲಿ PLC programming, robotic welding line maintenance, SCADA monitoring -- ಎಲ್ಲ confidently answer ಮಾಡ್ದೆ. Rs 7.5 LPA offer!

ಅಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ phone ಮಾಡಿ ಹೇಳ್ದೆ -- "ಅಪ್ಪ, Tata Motors-ನಲ್ಲಿ job ಸಿಕ್ತು." ಅಪ್ಪ welding mask ತೆಗೆದು ಕೂತ್ಕೊಂಡ್ರು ಅಂತೆ. "ನನ್ನ ಮಗ Tata-ನಲ್ಲಿ Engineer" -- ಆ ಮಾತು ಅವರ ಬಾಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೂರು ಸಲ ಹೇಳಿರಬೇಕು ಆ ದಿನ.
