A Commerce Graduate at Honeywell: The Story They Said Was Impossible
“They told me I can't. EDWartens told me I can. Honeywell proved them wrong.”
Chapter 1
THE STRUGGLE
Where it all began
I am a B.Com graduate. Let me say that again, because when I tell people I work at Honeywell as an Automation Engineer, they always ask me to repeat my educational background. B.Com. Bachelor of Commerce. Accounting, economics, business law. Not a single engineering subject in my entire academic career.
Before EDWartens, I was a data entry operator at a small company in Hyderabad. Rs 15,000 per month. My job was to type numbers from one spreadsheet into another. Eight hours a day, five days a week. My fingers typed, but my brain was dying. I knew I was capable of more, but nobody would give me a chance.
Chapter 2
THE DISCOVERY
A light in the dark
When I told my friends I wanted to learn industrial automation, they laughed. Actually laughed. "You don't know the difference between AC and DC current," one of them said. "Automation is for engineers," said another. My own cousin, who is an electrical engineer, told me, "Deepika, be realistic. This is not for you."
Chapter 3
THE TRANSFORMATION
Becoming an engineer
I joined EDWartens despite every voice telling me I couldn't. The assessment test was hard, but I passed. The first month was brutal. I didn't know what a resistor was. I didn't know what PLC stood for. I was starting from absolute zero while others in my batch already had engineering fundamentals.
But here is what I learned about EDWartens -- they don't just teach engineers. They create them. The trainers started me from basics. Electrical fundamentals. Circuit theory. Motor principles. The VR training was my lifeline -- I could see how a motor worked in 3D, I could trace circuits visually, I could practice on virtual panels without the fear of making a mistake in front of everyone.
Chapter 4
THE TRIUMPH
Victory at last
By the third month, something clicked. I went from not knowing what PLC meant to writing ladder logic programs that controlled entire production lines in simulation. The Wartens UK CPD certification, the hands-on training on 14 PLC brands, the SCADA projects -- they compressed years of engineering education into months of focused, practical training.
When Honeywell called me for an interview, I was terrified. But I was also prepared. The interview panel was surprised by my background, but they were more surprised by my knowledge. I demonstrated a SCADA project I had built, explained PLC fault-finding procedures, and discussed industrial communication protocols. They offered me the position on the spot.
My cousin, the electrical engineer who told me automation was not for me? He earns Rs 6 LPA at a small firm. I earn Rs 8 LPA at Honeywell. I don't say this to boast. I say this because someone out there, right now, is being told they can't. They are being told it is too late, they are too old, they are from the wrong background. I want them to know -- the only thing that decides your future is your willingness to learn.
They told me I can't. EDWartens told me I can. Honeywell proved them wrong.
