If you are a mechanical engineer feeling stuck in a traditional design or manufacturing role, switching to automation engineering could be the best career move you make. Mechanical engineers have several inherent advantages that make this transition smoother than you might expect.
Your mechanical engineering background gives you a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, machine design, pneumatics, hydraulics and material handling systems. This domain knowledge is invaluable in automation because you understand what the machines are supposed to do. Many pure electrical engineers who enter automation lack this manufacturing context.
The skills you need to add are primarily electrical and programming.
