Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), also known as inverters or AC drives, are one of the most common components in industrial automation. Understanding VFDs is essential for any automation engineer, as they are present in virtually every factory and industrial facility.

A VFD controls the speed of an AC motor by varying the frequency and voltage of the power supplied to it. This simple principle has profound implications. Without a VFD, a motor runs at full speed and must be mechanically throttled. With a VFD, the motor speed is precisely controlled electronically, saving significant energy and reducing mechanical wear.

Common VFD applications include conveyor speed control, pump and fan speed regulation, elevator and crane control, and machine tool spindle drives.
