EPLAN vs AutoCAD Electrical vs SOLIDWORKS Electrical: Which to Learn in 2026

The short answer

Learn EPLAN Electric P8 if you want to work with European machine builders, exported machinery or anyone who asks for a full IEC-compliant documentation set. Learn AutoCAD Electrical if you work with panel shops and consultants in India and the Gulf who live in the AutoCAD ecosystem. Learn SOLIDWORKS Electrical if your company already designs the machine in SOLIDWORKS and wants the harness and the enclosure to come from the same model. The concepts transfer; the employers do not care about the concepts.

The distinction that actually matters

Plain AutoCAD is drafting: lines that look like a circuit. All three packages here are different in kind, because the drawing is a view of a database.

When you place a contactor in EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical, you are not drawing a symbol. You are instantiating a device with a part number, a manufacturer, coil and contact data, and terminals. From that database the software produces the bill of materials, the terminal strip drawing, the wire list, the cable schedule and the cross-references from a coil to its contacts, and it keeps them all consistent when you change something.

That is the whole value. A panel drawn in plain AutoCAD needs a human to keep the BOM in step with the schematic, and the human does not, which is why the panel shop builds something the drawing does not describe. See control panel wiring standards in India for what the shop is working to.

EPLAN Electric P8

The de facto standard in German and wider European machine building, and therefore in any Indian company exporting machines to Europe or building under a European licence.

Strengths: the strictest and most complete implementation of IEC 61355 and IEC 81346 device designation, excellent terminal and cable handling, very strong automatic report generation, and a parts database ecosystem with real manufacturer data. If a customer asks for a documentation set to a European standard, EPLAN produces it without argument.

Trade: the steepest of the three to learn, and licensing that assumes a company is buying rather than an individual.

AutoCAD Electrical

Autodesk's electrical toolset on top of AutoCAD. Its advantage is not technical, it is social: everyone in an Indian design office already has AutoCAD and already knows how to move around it, so adoption costs almost nothing.

Strengths: familiar environment, good panel and PLC I/O drawing generation, straightforward wire numbering and cross-referencing, and the largest pool of engineers in India who can pick up your drawing and work on it.

Trade: weaker than EPLAN on rigorous standards compliance and on complex multi-level cross-referencing, and its parts data is thinner.

SOLIDWORKS Electrical

The right answer when the electrical design has to agree with a mechanical model. Schematic and 3D routing share one database, so a cable's real length comes from the route through the machine rather than from an estimate, and the enclosure layout is checked against the actual parts.

Strengths: genuine mechanical and electrical integration, real harness lengths, clash detection in the panel.

Trade: pointless unless the mechanical side is already SOLIDWORKS.

Which to learn first from India

If you have no constraint, learn AutoCAD Electrical first because it gets you employable in the widest set of Indian panel and consultancy work, then add EPLAN when you meet an export project, which you will. If your employer builds machines for Europe, skip straight to EPLAN.

Frequently asked questions

Is plain AutoCAD enough for control panels? It is enough to produce a drawing and not enough to produce a documentation set. Small shops do it and pay for it in rework.

Does EPLAN certification matter? For European employers it carries weight. For most Indian roles the portfolio matters more: a complete schematic set with terminal plans, cable schedules and a BOM says more than a certificate.

Which is best for BIM and building projects? None of these three. That is Revit MEP territory, and the deliverable is a coordinated model rather than a panel schematic.
