Why this training
HMI programming starts with the PLC program
An HMI screen does nothing on its own. Every button, lamp, value and alarm on it is tied to a tag in the PLC program, so building a useful screen means knowing what the program does with that tag. That is why the AEP teaches the PLC first in each brand, then the screens for it.
In the Siemens phase you configure an HMI device and its network, build screens and navigation, then pop-ups, an alarm view, trends and user administration, followed by two WinCC SCADA sessions. In the Allen-Bradley phase, three FactoryTalk View sessions cover tags and graphics, alarms, trends and data logs, then security, reports and event logging, and a system integration session puts it all into one project. The multi-platform phase adds InTouch, iFix, Movicon and INVT.

Good operator screens follow a design practice: show what is abnormal, keep colour for alarms, group what the operator needs together. Ask us insteadAn HMI (human-machine interface) is the operator screen on a machine or a panel. It shows what the PLC program is doing and lets the operator start, stop, change set points and acknowledge alarms. Every object on an HMI screen is tied to a tag in the PLC program.
An HMI is usually one screen for one machine. SCADA is supervisory software on PCs or servers that collects data from many PLCs, shows the whole process, raises alarms and keeps history. The skills overlap: screens, tags, alarms and trends. The AEP teaches both.

No. HMI programming is taught inside the AEP, which lasts 3 to 12 months depending on the phases a candidate completes and covers 20 PLC brands along with SCADA and drives. To learn HMI design on your own first, the free online HMI course is open to anyone.
The AEP carries a written job guarantee with conditions (all phases completed, at least 90% attendance, assessments passed, at least 10 arranged interviews attended, at least 5 applications a week, no more than 3 valid offers rejected); if a candidate who meets them is not placed within nine months of completing, the programme fee is refunded.
