Where an electrical degree fits in automation

The same phases for every background. These are the sessions where an electrical degree is used most, and the ones that are new ground.

An electrical degree covers what a control panel switches: motors, starters, protection, power and the wiring diagrams that tie them together. Automation adds the layer that decides when it switches. That layer is a PLC program, the HMI or SCADA screen an operator works from, and the drive parameters and network between them.

PLC programming languages are defined in the international standard IEC 61131-3, which includes ladder diagram, function block diagram and structured text; the AEP has sessions on Function Block Diagram and Structured Text of their own. PLCopen publishes a plain summary of the standard. Drives are where the two sides meet most directly: a variable-frequency drive is configured by parameter and then commanded by the PLC.

Who trains here

Electrical engineers among the engineers who trained with us

78 engineers with an EEE degree are among the 163 trained engineers shown on our placements page; their placement status is not recorded. Engineers with a diploma in electrical engineering are counted under diplomas, so each engineer appears once. See the placements page.

Questions

Automation course for electrical engineers: your questions

Ask us instead

Yes. Automation projects are built on electrical work: motors, starters, drives, control panels and wiring diagrams are part of every one. What an automation course adds is the control layer: PLC programming, HMI and SCADA screens, and the networks that connect them. The AEP teaches both sides in the classroom in Electronic City, Bangalore.

EDWartens runs the Automation Engineer Program (AEP), a classroom programme of 3 to 12 months in assessment-gated phases. It covers 20 PLC brands, including Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, Delta, ABB and Schneider Electric, SCADA software including WinCC, FactoryTalk View and Ignition, HMI screens and drives, then interview preparation and project work. Admissions confirms eligibility for your background before you join.

No prior automation experience is assumed. PLC programming starts with the Siemens TIA Portal introduction and works through bit logic, timers, counters and comparators before analog values and PID, and later Function Block Diagram and Structured Text.

Diploma holders train in the AEP too. The route for freshers and diploma holders, and what the first months cover, is explained at edwartens.co.in/plc-training-for-freshers. Admissions confirms eligibility for your background.
