Drives, taught where a PLC engineer meets them
Most motors a PLC engineer deals with are started by a starter or run by a drive, and the PLC program decides when. The AEP teaches drives in that order: first the starter circuits a panel wires by hand, then what a VFD does and how its parameters are set, then a drive commissioned and controlled from a PLC program.
The first two drive sessions sit in phase 1, Basic Engineering, which ends with a practical: a panel drawing and starter circuit wiring. The SINAMICS session comes near the end of the Siemens phase, after the PLC programming it relies on, and a Delta VFD follows in the multi-platform phase.

The Siemens drive session is built around the SINAMICS range: how a VFD works, setting parameters, commissioning, then controlling the drive from a PLC program. In the multi-platform phase a Delta VFD shows the same ideas on a second maker's drive.

Ask us insteadA variable frequency drive (VFD) controls the speed of an AC motor by changing the frequency and voltage it supplies. It is used on pumps, fans and conveyors, and it ramps a motor up and down smoothly instead of starting it at full speed.
A direct-on-line (DOL) starter connects the motor straight to the supply. A star-delta starter starts it in star to cut the starting current, then switches to delta. A soft starter ramps the voltage up at start only. A VFD controls speed the whole time the motor runs. The AEP starts with DOL and star-delta wiring, then moves to VFDs.
The classroom schedule has a VFD basics and parameter session, a Siemens SINAMICS session that ends in PLC to VFD integration, and a Delta VFD in the multi-platform phase. Admissions can tell you which drive models your batch uses.
No. Drives are taught inside the AEP, which lasts 3 to 12 months depending on the phases a candidate completes and covers 20 PLC brands, SCADA and HMI too. To learn drives on your own first, the free online VFD course is open to anyone.
The AEP carries a written job guarantee with conditions (all phases completed, at least 90% attendance, assessments passed, at least 10 arranged interviews attended, at least 5 applications a week, no more than 3 valid offers rejected); if a candidate who meets them is not placed within nine months of completing, the programme fee is refunded.
