PLC or SCADA: which should you learn first?
Learn PLC programming first. A SCADA system does not control the machine itself: it reads and writes the tags in PLC programs, shows the process on screens, raises alarms and keeps history. Without knowing how the program behind a tag works, a SCADA screen is only a drawing.
The AEP follows that order inside each brand. In the Siemens phase, thirteen sessions of PLC programming in TIA Portal come before two HMI sessions and two WinCC SCADA sessions. In the Allen-Bradley phase, Studio 5000 comes before three FactoryTalk View sessions and a system integration project. Phase 4 then adds more SCADA and HMI software, and IIoT.

SCADA is supervisory software that collects data from many PLCs, shows the process on screens, raises alarms and keeps history. A DCS is a distributed control system, engineered as one system with its own controllers and operator stations, used for continuous processes such as refineries and chemical plants. An HMI is an operator screen at a single machine.
PLC first. SCADA reads and writes the tags in PLC programs, so a SCADA screen only makes sense once you know how the program behind each tag works. The AEP follows that order: in the Siemens and Allen-Bradley phases, PLC programming comes before the HMI and SCADA sessions.
SCADA software in the AEP includes WinCC, FactoryTalk View and Ignition. The course schedule has two WinCC SCADA sessions in the Siemens phase, three FactoryTalk View sessions and a system integration project in the Allen-Bradley phase, and a session on InTouch, iFix and Movicon in phase 4.
DCS is covered as concepts: one session in phase 4 introduces DCS process, operator and engineering stations. The AEP is not a DCS platform course, and DCS systems such as Yokogawa, Honeywell and Emerson are not counted as PLC brands. More on the DCS training page.
Starter circuits and a panel layout drawing, Siemens HMI screens, a WinCC SCADA application, a SINAMICS VFD integrated with a PLC, a FactoryTalk View application and a full SCADA project, an InTouch application, an AI-assisted PLC capstone, then project work as a junior engineer on Wartens automation projects in the placement phase.
The AEP carries a written job guarantee with conditions (all phases completed, at least 90% attendance, assessments passed, at least 10 arranged interviews attended, at least 5 applications a week, no more than 3 valid offers rejected); if a candidate who meets them is not placed within nine months of completing, the programme fee is refunded.
