The short answer

Emerson DeltaV is the easiest of the three to engineer and dominates pharmaceutical and speciality chemicals. Honeywell Experion PKS is strongest where the plant is large, old and continuous, particularly refining. Yokogawa CENTUM VP has the strongest availability record and is the usual choice in oil and gas and bulk petrochemicals. None of them is a better product in the abstract, and no plant has ever changed DCS because an engineer preferred a different one.

What a DCS is, in one paragraph

A distributed control system runs a continuous process: a distillation column, a reactor, a boiler. It is not a faster PLC. The differences that matter are that the control strategy is built from function blocks with engineering units attached rather than from rungs, that the operator display is part of the same database as the control logic instead of a separate HMI project, and that redundancy of controller, network and power supply is assumed rather than added. Where a PLC integrator wires an HMI to tags, a DCS engineer configures one system and the display follows.

Emerson DeltaV

DeltaV's design goal was to remove engineering hours. Devices are auto-sensed, the control modules come from a library, and the operator graphics are generated from the same modules, so a loop added at ten in the morning appears on the operator screen without anybody drawing it.

That matters most where the process changes often and validation is expensive, which is why it is so common in pharma. The batch layer follows ISA-88 closely and the audit trail is built for 21 CFR Part 11 rather than bolted on.

The trade is licence cost and a strong tie to Emerson's own instrumentation and AMS device management.

Honeywell Experion PKS

Experion's ancestry is TDC 3000, and Honeywell has kept a migration path from it for decades. In a refinery that has been running since the 1980s, that path is worth more than any feature: the plant can replace controllers without rewriting thirty years of control strategy or retraining every operator at once.

Experion is also the strongest of the three on advanced process control, alarm management to EEMUA 191 and ISA 18.2, and integration with Honeywell's own safety system.

The trade is that it is the least approachable of the three for a new engineer.

Yokogawa CENTUM VP

Yokogawa's pitch is availability, and it is not marketing: CENTUM has an unusually strong field record for continuous uptime, and the company publishes it. In LNG, refining and bulk petrochemicals, where an unplanned trip costs more in a day than the control system cost in total, that is the whole argument.

CENTUM's engineering environment is more prescriptive than DeltaV's. Engineers who learned DeltaV first often find it rigid; engineers who maintain plants often find that the rigidity is the point.
