Earthing and lightning protection design for a factory building: soil data to electrodes, risk, LPS layout and SPD schedule

Design the earthing and lightning protection of a single-storey packaging factory: turn a Wenner survey into a design resistivity, size the ring and rod electrodes and the main earthing conductor, plan the bonding, run the IEC 62305-2 risk assessment, choose the LPS class, lay out the air termination and down conductors with the separation distance, write the SPD schedule and the test plan, and bring it together in a design report. A complete sample pack shows each document for the same building.

A shareable EDWartens certificate

Finish every module and pass the final assessment, and the optional EDWartens certificate is yours. It carries a unique verification code on a public page anyone can check, so it stands up when a recruiter looks it up. See it below.

The course itself stays free whether or not you ever buy one.

Stuck? Ask a practising engineer

A free course usually means a comment section and hope. This one does not. Every module has an Ask-your-trainer panel that reaches the same engineers who teach our paid programme: people who commission panels for a living, not moderators.

Common questions

Who is this earthing and lightning protection course for?

It is for electrical design, MEP, substation and maintenance engineers and final-year electrical students who design, check or maintain earthing and lightning protection, including those on industrial, commercial and utility projects in India and the Gulf. You should know Ohm's law, three-phase basics and what a fault current is.

Is the course free to learn?

Yes. Every module, the notes, the worked problems, the project and the final assessment are free. Only the certificate is paid, if you want one.

Which standards does it cover?

IS 3043 and BS 7430 for electrodes, IEC 60364-5-54 for protective conductors, IEEE 80 for substation touch and step voltage and grid design, IEEE 81 for testing, and IEC 62305 (adopted in India as IS/IEC 62305) for lightning risk, the LPS and SPDs. The notes paraphrase the standards and show which edition a calculation uses; buy the editions your project cites.

Do I need ETAP or other earthing software?

No. Every calculation is done by hand or in a spreadsheet you build, and every worked number was checked. A free online risk calculator is used to check the IEC 62305-2 assessment. Go on to the ETAP Power System Analysis course to see a grid study in software.

How long does the Earthing and Lightning Protection Design course take?

About 21 hours of video, notes and practice at your own pace, of which about 14 hours is video. The optional factory project takes about 16 hours more.

What certificate does the Earthing and Lightning Protection Design course give?

An EDWartens Certificate of Completion, issued when you pass the 15-question final at 60 percent, with a number anyone can verify on our site. It is not a licence or a certificate from BIS, IEEE, IEC or any electrical authority, and it does not authorise you to sign off an installation where a licensed person is required.

What should I take before this course?

The Electrical Design Engineering course covers loads, cables and breakers and is the natural step before this one. After it, go on to Substation Design, Protection Relays or Hazardous Areas, which build on the earthing, fault clearing and bonding taught here.

What job does earthing and lightning protection design lead to?

It covers the earthing and lightning work of an electrical design engineer at a consultant or EPC contractor, an MEP engineer on commercial buildings, and the testing and inspection a maintenance or commissioning engineer does on plants and substations.

Is the Earthing and Lightning Protection Design course free in India, and what does the certificate cost?

Yes. Learning costs ₹0 in India: every module, the written notes, the practice tasks and the final assessment, with no card and no trial period. The only paid item is the optional EDWartens Certificate of Completion, ₹559 including GST for this intermediate course, paid in rupees through Razorpay, and only if you want it after passing the final assessment.
