Automotive quality engineer
The quality system and the core tools a car parts supplier is asked for: ISO 9001, SPC and MSA, AIAG-VDA FMEA, APQP with the Control Plan and PPAP, and IATF 16949 internal auditing.
One course at a time. The next unlocks when you are halfway through this one.

Step 1Quality managementBeginnerISO 9001:2026 Quality Management and Internal Auditing
Free course for QA and QC engineers: ISO 9001:2026 clause by clause, and internal auditing to ISO 19011:2026. The certificate is optional and paid.
- Explain what changed in ISO 9001:2026 and plan the transition before 30 September 2029
- Analyse context, interested parties, climate change and scope, and map the processes of a QMS
- Test leadership, quality culture, ethical behaviour and the quality policy with evidence
Step 2Quality managementBeginnerSPC and MSA: Control Charts, Capability and Gauge R&R
Statistical process control and measurement system analysis worked with real arithmetic: variation and rational subgroups, X-bar and R, X-bar and S, individuals and attribute charts, run rules and reaction plans, Cp, Cpk, Pp and Ppk with confidence, and gauge R&R by average and range and by ANOVA, with attribute agreement, finishing with how SPC and MSA sit in APQP, PPAP and IATF 16949.
- Explain variation and choose rational subgroups and sampling plans
- Build X-bar and R, X-bar and S, individuals and attribute control charts with the right constants
- Apply run rules and write a reaction plan for a signal
Step 3Quality managementIntermediateAutomotive Core Tools: FMEA (AIAG-VDA 1st Edition)
The core tool an automotive customer audits hardest, taught to the 2019 AIAG-VDA handbook: the seven-step method, the five T's, the three-level structure tree, functions written so the failures fall out of them, effect against mode against cause, prevention against detection controls, the severity, occurrence and detection tables, the Action Priority table that replaced RPN, optimisation with owners and dates, results documentation, a reverse check on the shop floor and the supplemental FMEA-MSR.
- Scope a PFMEA with the five T's and set a boundary you can defend to a customer
- Build the three-level structure tree and write every function as verb, noun and requirement
- Place failure effect, mode and cause at the right level so the argument about which is which stops
Step 4Quality managementBeginnerAPQP, Control Plan and PPAP
The automotive launch discipline in plain steps: the five APQP phases and gate reviews, special characteristics, the process flow, PFMEA and Control Plan chain, Safe Launch and reaction plans, the 18 PPAP elements and five submission levels, the part submission warrant, run at rate with a capacity calculation, and what to do when a submission is rejected or a change is made.
- Explain why APQP exists and name its five phases, outputs and gate reviews
- Build a launch timing plan backwards from the start of production and find its critical path
- Turn customer needs into measurable requirements and special characteristics
Step 5Quality managementBeginnerIATF 16949 Automotive QMS and Internal Auditing
What IATF 16949 adds to ISO 9001 for car parts suppliers, customer specific requirements, the automotive process approach, product safety, supplier and production controls, change control, SPC and problem solving, then internal auditing practice: a risk-based audit programme, shop-floor interviews, audit trails through the core tools and graded nonconformity statements.
- Explain how IATF 16949:2016 is used with ISO 9001 and what customer specific requirements and Sanctioned Interpretations are
- Draw a turtle diagram and test automotive risk analysis, product safety and contingency plans
- Check competence, calibration and laboratory evidence, and handle a gauge found out of tolerance
How the path works
Join the path and its first course is added to your account straight away; the next one is added when you are halfway through, so you never face a pile of unstarted courses. Each has its own progress, notes and final. Take them in the order shown: each assumes the one before. Each course has one assessment: a final of 15 questions drawn from every module, pass mark 60%, with 3 attempts and then a 24 hour wait, so the assessment checks that you followed the lessons rather than testing exam nerves.
Questions
- Is the Automotive quality engineer free?
- Yes. Every course in the path is free in full: lessons, notes, practice tasks and assessments. Joining the path adds all of them to your account in one step. The only paid item is the optional EDWartens Certificate of Completion for each course.
- In what order should I take the courses?
- In the order listed: each course assumes the one before it. Every course keeps its own progress, final and certificate, so you can also take one on its own.
- Do I get one certificate for the whole path?
- Certificates are per course, issued when you pass that course's final assessment and bought only if you want them. Finishing every course in a path gives you one certificate per course.
