A spreadsheet: Excel, Excel for the web or LibreOffice Calc (free). A PDF viewer that can measure on a drawing is useful for digital take-off. The take-off sheet, bar bending schedule and bill are described in the notes so you can build them yourself.
Hardware
None. A scale rule and highlighters help with paper take-off, but everything can be done on screen.
Who it is for
Beginner. For civil and architecture students, site engineers moving into estimating, and new quantity surveyors. You should read a floor plan and use a spreadsheet; no estimating experience is needed.

FAQ
Common questions
What is the quantity surveying and building estimation course?
It is a free-to-learn course that shows you how to turn building drawings into measured quantities and a priced bill of quantities, then follow the job through tender, variations, interim valuations and the final account. One two-storey clinic is worked through every module.
Who is the Quantity Surveying and Building Estimation course for?
Civil and architecture students, site engineers moving into estimating, and new quantity surveyors or estimators. You should be able to read a floor plan and use a spreadsheet. No estimating experience is needed.
Which measurement standards does it teach?
It teaches the method that carries across standards and names the families: RICS NRM 1 and NRM 2 for building, POMI where Gulf contracts name it, and CESMM4 for civil works. IS 1200 is mentioned as a regional alternative. The RICS NRM page was checked on 1 November 2026. The notes paraphrase the rules, so read the current edition before measuring a real job.
Why are the prices in cost units?
A cost unit (CU) stands in for money so the method is the same whatever currency or price book you use at work. When you price a real job you replace each CU rate with a real rate from your own market.
Will this make me a chartered surveyor?
No. The course teaches methods used in quantity surveying and estimating. Its certificate is a verifiable certificate of completion from EDWartens, not a chartered or accredited qualification, and the course is not affiliated with RICS or any other professional body.
Do I need special software?
No. A spreadsheet is enough for the take-off sheets, the bar bending schedule, the bill and the valuation. A PDF viewer that can measure on a drawing helps but is optional.
How long does it take, and is it free?
About 14 hours of video and around 21 hours in total with the notes, worked problems and the optional project, at your own pace. Every module, the notes, the optional school-block project and the final assessment are free to learn.
What certificate does the Quantity Surveying and Building Estimation course give?
A verifiable certificate of completion, issued when you finish the modules and pass the 15-question final at 60 percent. It has a unique certificate number, a QR code and a public verification page that shows the course, the modules covered and your final score.
Is the Quantity Surveying and Building Estimation course free in India, and what does the certificate cost?
Yes. Learning costs ₹0 in India: every module, the written notes, the practice tasks and the final assessment, with no card and no trial period. The only paid item is the optional EDWartens Certificate of Completion, ₹499 including GST for this beginner course, paid in rupees through Razorpay, and only if you want it after passing the final assessment.
