Portfolio Projects That Actually Get an Automation Engineer Interviews

One project, properly

The most common mistake on a fresher automation CV is five shallow projects. The interviewer picks one, asks three questions, hits the bottom of your knowledge in ninety seconds, and the interview is effectively over.

One project you can be questioned about for twenty minutes beats five you cannot defend. Depth signals that you did the work. Breadth, at fresher level, usually signals that you followed five tutorials.

What makes a project worth putting on a CV

It has a specification. Not "I made a conveyor". What was it supposed to do, in what cycle time, with what safety conditions, handling what faults?

You made decisions. Why a TON and not a TONR. Why the interlock is in series. Why that sensor. Decisions are what you are asked about.

Something went wrong. This is the most valuable part, and the part people hide. The follow-up question is always "what went wrong and what did you do?" A project with no problems is a project you did not really build.

It has an outcome you can state. Cycle time, throughput, number of I/O, number of stations. A number makes it concrete.

Projects worth building

A multi-station sequence machine. Three or more stations, a step-based sequence, interlocks, a stop that leaves the machine in a recoverable state, and a restart that does not resume mid-cycle. This is the single best fresher project because it exercises everything and matches what machine builders do.

A batching or dosing process. Analog inputs, scaling, setpoints, a recipe structure, totalising. Shows you can handle analog and data rather than only booleans.

A conveyor sortation system. Sensors, tracking a part along the line, diverting on a criterion. Introduces the idea of tracking state that moves, which is a genuinely different way of thinking.

A panel you wired yourself. Photograph it. Include the drawing you built to. Being able to say "I wired this, continuity checked it, and found my own error at terminal 14" separates you immediately.

An HMI with a real alarm list. Not twelve alarms because there are twelve faults. An alarm list designed with priorities and dead-bands, which you can justify. See alarm configuration.

What to avoid

  • Traffic lights. Every course does it, so it distinguishes nobody.
  • Anything you cannot explain the wiring of. If you only ever saw it in software, expect to be caught.
  • Copied projects. Interviewers in this industry are engineers who have built the same things. They can tell.
  • Overclaiming your role. "We built" becomes "what did you do" in the next sentence.

How to write it up

Three or four bullets per project on the CV, verb first, one number where you honestly have one:

12-station bottle filling line (Siemens S7-1200, KTP700 HMI) - Wrote the step sequence for fill, cap and reject, including a stop that returns all stations to home before restart - Built the HMI mimic, alarm list with dead-bands, and a production trend - Wired and continuity checked the control panel to the schematic, then loop checked 96 I/O points against the schedule - Reduced changeover between bottle sizes from 40 minutes to 25 by adding a recipe selection

Note what that does: names the platform, describes your personal work, mentions the hardware, and ends on a number.

Keep the evidence

  • Photographs of the panel and the machine
  • A screenshot of the HMI
  • The I/O schedule, redacted if it belongs to a customer
  • A one-page description you can hand over

Bring them. Interviewers rarely ask, and are consistently impressed when you produce them unprompted.

If you have no real project yet

Build one in simulation and be honest that it is simulated. A well-built simulated machine with a proper specification, alarms and documentation is far better than nothing, and honesty about its scope costs you nothing. See free PLC software to practise with.

Then close the hardware gap as soon as you can, because the questions eventually get physical.
