Resume Tips for Automation Engineers
In the automation industry, your resume needs to communicate technical competence quickly and clearly. Hiring managers at automation companies spend an average of 30 seconds scanning a resume before deciding whether to read further. Here is how to make those 30 seconds count.
Lead with a clear professional summary that states your specialisation. Instead of vague statements, be specific about the PLC brands you have worked with, the SCADA platforms you know, and the types of projects you have handled. Include keywords that match job descriptions as many companies use automated resume screening.
Your technical skills section should be organised by category: PLC platforms (Siemens TIA Portal, Allen Bradley Studio 5000, etc.), SCADA software (WinCC, FactoryTalk, Ignition), programming languages (Structured Text, Ladder Diagram, Python), industrial protocols (Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Modbus), and tools (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN).
Project experience is the most important section. For each project, describe what you built or programmed, which technologies you used, and quantify the impact where possible.
