Electrical Design Engineer Career Roadmap in India: Skills, Software and Salaries

What the job is
An electrical design engineer turns a project brief into an installation that can be built: load estimation, cable and breaker sizing, panel schedules, single-line diagrams, earthing and lightning protection, lighting design, and the studies that prove the system is safe. In India the work spans commercial buildings, data centres, factories, solar plants and substations, and every one of those sectors is expanding faster than the supply of engineers who can do it.
The skills, in order
- Fundamentals: three-phase power, power factor, demand and diversity, fault current. The electrical design engineering course starts here.
- Load estimation and cable sizing: demand factors, derating, voltage drop, short-circuit withstand.
- Protection: breaker selection, discrimination, relay coordination.
- Drawings: single-line diagrams, panel GA drawings, cable schedules, lighting layouts.
- Studies: load flow, short circuit, arc flash, harmonics, earthing grid.
- Standards: IS 732, IEC 60364, IEC 61439, IS 3043, NBC, and the utility's requirements.

The software stack
| Task | Software | Free course |
|---|---|---|
| Schematics and panel drawings | AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN | AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN |
| 2D drafting | AutoCAD | AutoCAD |
| Power system studies | ETAP | ETAP |
| Lighting design | DIALux evo | DIALux |
| Building services BIM | Revit MEP | Revit MEP |
| Calculations | Excel | electrical design |
ETAP and Revit are the two that move a CV into the consultant and EPC shortlists.
Year by year
- Year 0 to 1: drafting under a senior; cable schedules, panel drawings, load lists. Learn to read the whole project.
- Year 1 to 3: own the calculations; run ETAP studies; attend site for commissioning; learn the utility approval process.
- Year 3 to 6: lead a project's electrical design; review vendor drawings; specify switchgear and transformers.
- Year 6 onward: design manager, or specialise (protection, data centres, renewables), or move to the client side.

Salaries, realistically
Freshers at MEP consultants and EPCs start around 3 to 4.5 lakh a year; at three to five years, 6 to 10 lakh; senior designers and study specialists 12 to 25 lakh, more in data-centre and Gulf projects. ETAP competence commands a premium because few engineers have it.
Who hires
MEP consultants, EPC contractors, switchgear manufacturers, data-centre developers, solar EPCs, industrial plants with in-house engineering, and the Gulf, which recruits Indian electrical designers constantly.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a licence to sign drawings in India? For many building approvals a licensed electrical contractor or a chartered engineer's sign-off is needed; the designer works under that framework.
Is this different from an automation engineer? Yes: the designer specifies the power system; the automation engineer programs what it feeds. The two work together and the instrumentation versus automation article draws the other boundary.
How do I start with no experience? Finish the free electrical design and ETAP courses, redraw a real building's SLD as a portfolio piece, and apply to MEP consultants as a design trainee.
