How to Become an Automation Engineer in India

Automation engineering is one of the most rewarding and stable career paths available in India today. Whether you are a fresh graduate, a working professional seeking a career change, or a diploma holder looking to upskill, there is a clear path to becoming an automation engineer.

The educational foundation typically involves a degree or diploma in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, or Mechanical Engineering. What matters more is developing practical skills in PLC programming, SCADA systems, industrial networking and related technologies.

The key technical skills you need include proficiency in at least two major PLC platforms (Siemens and Allen Bradley are the most versatile), ability to configure and operate SCADA systems, understanding of industrial communication protocols (Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Modbus), VFD commissioning, electrical and pneumatic fundamentals, and increasingly, Python and basic data analytics.
