Data Centre Electrical and Critical Power

The electrical side of data centres, where the hiring is: the power path from grid to rack, tiers and redundancy, UPS and generators, the calculations, load flow, short-circuit and arc flash studies, PUE, monitoring, and what AI GPU racks change.

  • Trace data centre power from the utility to the rack
  • Compare N, N+1 and 2N redundancy and the Uptime Institute tiers
  • Calculate rack current, kVA and kW for single and three-phase feeds

Data Centre Cooling, BMS and DCIM

How data centres are cooled, controlled and run: hot and cold aisles, CRAC and CRAH units, chilled water plant, economisers, liquid and immersion cooling for AI racks, cooling redundancy and continuous cooling, BMS design, DCIM and operations, and PUE, WUE and CUE. Built on MEP Academy, TEQNYAT and Bryce Anderson lessons.

  • Trace the heat path and calculate the airflow and water flow a load needs
  • Compare CRAC and CRAH units, containment options and air- and water-cooled plant
  • Explain economisers and calculate chiller COP and kW per ton

Data Centre and MEP Testing and Commissioning (L1 to L5)

How a data centre and its critical MEP systems are proved before go-live: the commissioning process, OPR and basis of design, commissioning levels L1 to L5, FAT and SAT, electrical pre-functional tests, protection injection, UPS, battery, generator and ATS testing, load banks and heat load tests, chilled water flushing and hydro tests, liquid cooling, BMS and EPMS point-to-point checks, integrated systems testing, the issues log and handover.

  • Turn an OPR into measurable acceptance criteria and plan commissioning levels L0 to L5
  • Write test scripts with prerequisites, expected results, abort criteria and sign-offs
  • Witness a FAT, run L2 installation checks and a site acceptance test

Power Quality and Harmonics: IEEE 519 and IEC 61000 course cover
FreeElectricalIntermediate

Power Quality and Harmonics: IEEE 519 and IEC 61000

Power quality for electrical engineers in plants, buildings, utilities and data centres: sags, swells, transients, flicker and unbalance; harmonics from drives, UPS, IT loads and inverters; THD, TDD, K-factor and resonance; IEEE 519-2022 limits at the point of common coupling and the IEC 61000 family; Class A measurement and Python analysis; reactors, detuned capacitor banks, passive and active filters, active front ends and multipulse drives; and a harmonic study in the free OpenDSS simulator.

  • Classify sags, swells, transients, flicker and unbalance and judge ride-through on ITIC and SEMI F47
  • Calculate THD, TDD, true RMS, true power factor, K-factor and neutral current from a spectrum
  • Predict the harmonics of six, twelve and eighteen pulse drives, UPS, IT loads and inverters

Why learn Data centre in India

AI and cloud computing are driving a worldwide wave of data centre construction. These sites need engineers who understand power paths that cannot fail, heat removal at high rack densities, and the monitoring systems that tie the two together. The engineering fundamentals carry over from country to country.

How to choose

Electrical engineers should start with Data Centre Electrical and Critical Power; HVAC and BMS engineers with Data Centre Cooling, BMS and DCIM. Most facility roles need a working grasp of both.

Building Management Systems is the foundation course for the controls side if BACnet, Modbus and HVAC control loops are new to you.

Questions

Who are these courses for?
Electrical, HVAC, BMS and facilities engineers and technicians working in, or moving into, data centres.
Is cooling covered, or only power?
Both, in separate courses, with BMS and DCIM covered in the cooling course.
Do I need data centre experience?
No. A basic electrical or HVAC background is enough.
Is it free, and is there a certificate?
Every lesson, note and assessment is free. The EDWartens certificate is optional and paid, and you can finish without it.
