Switching From IT to Industrial Automation: An Honest Assessment

Who is asking

Two kinds of people, usually. Support and testing engineers whose roles feel automatable and who want something more physical and harder to offshore. And people who genuinely find factories interesting and are in IT because that is where the campus placements pointed.

Both are reasonable. The switch works more often than people expect, but not for the reasons they expect.

What transfers

Logical thinking and debugging method. This is real and it is the biggest one. An IT professional who has debugged distributed systems already has the instinct to narrow a problem down rather than guess, which is exactly what fault finding requires.

Comfort with tooling. Version control, structured documentation, and the general habit of working in an IDE. Automation is behind IT on all of these, so bringing the habits is genuinely valued.

Scripting. Python is increasingly useful in automation for data handling, reporting and IIoT work. Being able to write it is a differentiator.

Networking. If you understand TCP/IP, subnets, VLANs and switching, you already understand more about Profinet and Modbus TCP infrastructure than most automation engineers do. OT networking is a growing specialisation and this is a genuine head start.

Databases and SQL. SCADA historians, MES integration and reporting all need it.

What does not transfer

Anything physical. Reading schematics, wiring a panel, using a meter, understanding what a contactor does. None of this comes from software work and all of it is required.

Field instrumentation. Transmitters, calibration, 4 to 20 mA loops, valves. Entirely new.

Electrical safety. This is not a formality and it is not intuitive. It has to be learned properly.

The tolerance for imperfect information. Software has logs. A plant has an operator saying "it makes a noise sometimes".

The consequence model. A bad deploy is rolled back. A bad force moves a machine.

The salary question

Be prepared for this, because it is the part that surprises people most.

Automation freshers in India commonly start in the region of ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month depending on employer and role, and published market data puts entry controls roles at roughly ₹2.5 to 4.5 lakh per annum. If you are three or four years into an IT career, that is very likely a step down.

The honest framing:

  • You will probably take a cut for one to two years.
  • You catch up faster than a true fresher, because your debugging ability and professional habits are ahead, and because the scripting and networking overlap makes you useful in ways plant-only engineers are not.
  • The ceiling is comparable, and the specialised areas (OT security, MES integration, motion, process control) pay well.

If a course tells you that you will match your IT salary immediately, be sceptical.

Who this suits

It suits you if:
- You want work that is physical and site-based rather than screen-only
- You are genuinely interested in how things are made
- You can absorb a temporary salary reduction
- You do not mind travel, and sometimes shift work
- You want a field where offshoring is structurally harder, because somebody has to be standing next to the machine

It suits you less if:
- You want to work remotely. Automation is overwhelmingly on-site.
- You cannot take a financial step back right now.
- You dislike getting dirty, or noise, or heat.
- You want fast promotion cycles. Manufacturing moves more slowly than software.

That last point is worth sitting with. Plants change on a scale of years, not sprints.

The route

  1. Learn the electrical layer first. Not PLC software. Schematics, contactors, control circuits, safe working. This is the part IT people want to skip and must not.
  2. Then PLC fundamentals. Ladder, timers, sequences, the scan cycle. You will find this easy; it is simpler than what you already do.
  3. Then the field. Analog, instrumentation, drives. This is where the genuinely new knowledge is.
  4. Then real project work. The non-negotiable part. See PLC simulator vs real hardware.
  5. Aim your first application at roles that value the overlap. System integrators, IIoT and MES projects, OT networking, SCADA-heavy work. Do not apply as a generic fresher when you have transferable strengths a plain fresher does not.

Full-time or part-time
