What a PLC Training Syllabus Should Cover, Week by Week

Topic list or syllabus

Most institutes hand you a topic list: PLC, SCADA, HMI, VFD, robotics, panel wiring. It tells you nothing, because every institute lists the same six words and they can cover them in three weeks or six months.

A syllabus says when, for how long, and what you produce. Ask for that. If what comes back is still a topic list, that is your answer about how the course is planned.

Here is what a serious programme's shape looks like, so you have something to compare against.

Weeks 1 to 2: electrical foundations

Before any programming.

  • Reading electrical schematics, following a circuit across sheets
  • Contactors, relays, overloads, MCBs: what each does and how they are drawn
  • Control circuits: start, stop, seal-in, interlocks, at the wiring level
  • Safe working, isolation, and using a multimeter properly

You should produce: a wired motor start-stop circuit that works, built from a drawing, continuity checked by you before power-on.

If a course starts on day one with PLC software, be careful. Students who never learn the electrical layer become programmers who cannot commission anything.

Weeks 3 to 6: PLC fundamentals

  • PLC hardware: CPU, power supply, digital and analog I/O, addressing
  • The scan cycle, and why rung order matters
  • Ladder logic: contacts, coils, seal-in circuits
  • Timers and counters, all types, with real examples
  • Going online, watch tables, forcing, cross-reference
  • Fault finding a program that does not work

You should produce: a working machine sequence on real hardware, with interlocks, that you can put into fault and diagnose online.

By week six you should have wired and programmed something that moves. If you are still doing theory, the course is slow.

Weeks 7 to 10: analog, drives, and the field

You should produce: a calibrated loop, a drive parameterised from a real nameplate and bump-tested, and a documented analog scaling.

Weeks 11 to 14: HMI and SCADA

  • HMI screen design: what belongs on the main mimic and what goes a level down
  • Tag mapping between PLC and HMI
  • Alarms done properly: actionable, dead-bands, priorities
  • Trends, historians, recipes
  • More than one platform, because employers use more than one

You should produce: an operable HMI for the machine you built, with a working alarm list somebody else can use.

Weeks 15 to 18: multiple brands and networking

You should produce: the same function implemented on two different platforms, and a network fault you diagnosed yourself.

Weeks 19 onwards: real projects and commissioning

This is the part that is almost always missing, and it is the part that gets you hired.

  • Work on an actual client project, with a scope and a deadline
  • I/O loop checking against a schedule
  • Commissioning, including the parts that go wrong
  • Documentation: as-builts, test records, handover packs

You should produce: deliverables with your name on them that you can describe in an interview, in detail, including what went wrong.

Then: getting hired

  • CV rewritten against real job adverts, not a template
  • LinkedIn rebuilt so recruiters searching platform names find you
  • Mock interviews with people who sit on hiring panels
  • The fault-finding question rehearsed until it is boring

How long should it take

A course that covers all of the above properly, with real project time, runs five to six months full-time. Anything claiming to do it in four weeks is covering the first two sections and calling it complete.

Shorter courses are not automatically bad, but be clear what you are buying. A three-week PLC basics course is a three-week PLC basics course, and it is a reasonable thing to want. It is not a route to an automation job on its own.
