Is ETABS Free for Students? Legal Ways to Practise

The short answer
Is ETABS free for students? Not as a downloadable student version for individuals. ETABS is commercial software from CSI. Its sales page offers academic pricing only to universities that install it in a campus lab, backed by an Academic Use Letter from a dean or department head. You can ask CSI for a trial. For free practice on your own laptop, your college lab, a different tool with a student plan, or a course that teaches the workflow, are the legal routes.
CSI, Bentley and Autodesk pages were read on 1 November 2026 (November 2026). Licence terms change, so confirm them on the vendor page before you rely on them. This post never links to cracked or "free download" sites, and neither should you.
What CSI says on its own pages
CSI's pages state that Standalone and Network licences are no longer supported, and that users must move to Cloud Sign-in licences. So ETABS now needs a sign-in tied to a licence, whether you buy it, get it through a university, or run a trial. The current release on CSI's enhancements page is ETABS 23.3, dated 23 September 2026.
On the CSI sales page the academic paragraph is specific. Academic pricing is for universities that install CSI software in a campus computer lab for student use. A faculty member requests it with a university email, and a dean or department head must send an Academic Use Letter confirming non-commercial teaching use. We found no separate licence for an individual student on that page.
CSI also has an ETABS trial page. Its text loads through JavaScript, so we could not read the trial length for the current version. Older CSI release notes for ETABS 21 described a 30-day evaluation for non-commercial use. Treat that as history, and read the trial page before you start the clock.
Your legal options, compared
The table sets out the routes in the order most students try them.
Route | Cost to you | What you can do | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
College or university lab | Usually nothing | Full ETABS on lab machines | Lab hours and shared files |
CSI trial | Free for a limited time | Evaluate on your own laptop | Time limit, non-commercial use |
STAAD.Pro through Bentley Education | Free for students and educators | A different analysis tool, same ideas | Different menus and file formats |
Autodesk Education plan | Free for eligible students | Robot Structural Analysis | Verification and a yearly renewal |
A course that teaches the workflow | Free | Method, hand checks, a project | You still need software to click |

On the Bentley STAAD page, Bentley offers free access for students and educators through Bentley Education. Autodesk's Education plan gives eligible students one-year access that renews annually, for learning only, after identity checks. Both are different programs from ETABS, but the thinking carries over.
Can my laptop even run it
Check the machine before you chase a licence. CSI's system requirements page lists Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with a minimum of 16 GB of RAM and 6 GB of disk to install. It recommends 64 GB of RAM and a solid state drive. ETABS does not run on macOS. Many student laptops with 8 GB cannot run a building model, and a lab computer may be the better place.
What to practise while you wait for a licence
Do not wait for software to learn the thinking, and start with the first lesson of the ETABS course if you want a guide. The part of structural analysis that separates a careful engineer is the hand check, and you can do it in a spreadsheet. Here is a worked example of the first check to run on any new building model.
Worked example: the reaction sum. A floor plate is 18 m by 12 m, so its area is 216 m2. The slab is 200 mm thick reinforced concrete at 25 kN/m3, and the superimposed dead load is 2.0 kPa. The live load is 2.4 kPa. The load combination is 1.2D + 1.6L, the pattern used by ASCE 7 with ACI 318.
- Slab self-weight is 0.2 x 25 = 5.0 kPa.
- Dead load is 5.0 + 2.0 = 7.0 kPa.
- Service load is 7.0 + 2.4 = 9.4 kPa, so one floor carries 9.4 x 216 = 2,030.4 kN.
- The factored pressure is 1.2 x 7.0 + 1.6 x 2.4 = 8.4 + 3.84 = 12.24 kPa.
- One floor factored is 12.24 x 216 = 2,643.84 kN.
- Three identical floors give 3 x 2,643.84 = 7,931.52 kN.
Run the model, then add up all the vertical support reactions for the 1.2D + 1.6L combination. The sum should match the applied loads plus beam and column self-weight, which you can add separately. If it is off by more than about one percent, a load is missing, double counted or assigned to the wrong area. Finding that is worth more than a polished picture.
Check | Hand value | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
Slab self-weight | 5.0 kPa | 0.2 m x 25 kN/m3 |
Factored pressure | 12.24 kPa | 1.2 x 7.0 + 1.6 x 2.4 |
One floor, factored | 2,643.84 kN | 12.24 x 216 m2 |
Three floors, factored | 7,931.52 kN | 3 x 2,643.84 |

Where this free course fits
The free ETABS and SAFE Building Design course teaches that workflow on an eight-level office. It runs from grids and loads to seismic analysis and a SAFE slab check, with hand checks beside every result. It uses ACI 318-19 with ASCE 7-22. The software is not included, so use a lab, a trial or an equivalent tool to follow the clicks.
It is a free course with a verifiable certificate of completion, and anyone can check a certificate on our verification page. It is not a CSI certification, and it does not make you a structural engineer.
Safety and responsibility
A model is not a design. A qualified structural engineer, working under local regulations, is responsible for any real building, and software output must be checked by hand. Students should treat every example as practice, as the course does. In India the regional alternative codes are IS 456 for concrete and IS 1893 for earthquake loads, and a professional must follow the codes that apply to the project.
Keep your learning path honest
If you also want to see how employers read free certificates, read our post on whether free certificates are worth anything in India. For practising other software without paying, see free PLC software you can practise with at home, which follows the same legal-first approach.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Is ETABS free for students?
A: Not as an individual student download that we could find. CSI offers academic pricing to universities for campus labs, with an Academic Use Letter. Students can use a college lab, ask CSI for a trial, or learn the workflow with a course and a different tool.
Q: Is there a free ETABS trial?
A: CSI has an ETABS trial page. We could not read the current trial length because the page loads through JavaScript. Older CSI release notes described a 30-day non-commercial evaluation, so check the trial page before you start.
Q: What computer do I need for ETABS?
A: CSI lists Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with at least 16 GB of RAM and 6 GB of disk. It recommends 64 GB of RAM and an SSD. ETABS does not run on macOS.
Q: Is it safe to download a free ETABS crack?
A: No. Cracked software is illegal, often carries malware, and gives results nobody can stand behind. Use a lab, a trial or a student plan from another vendor instead.
Q: What free software can a student use to learn structural analysis?
A: Bentley offers free access to students and educators through Bentley Education, and Autodesk's Education plan covers Robot Structural Analysis for eligible students. Check each page for current terms.
Q: Is there a free ETABS course with a certificate?
A: Yes. EDWartens ETABS and SAFE Building Design is a free course with a verifiable certificate of completion. It teaches the workflow and hand checks, and it is not a CSI certification.
