PLC Programmer Salary in India 2026: Fresher to 10+ Years

The short answer

A PLC programmer in India earns about ₹4.5 lakh a year on average, roughly ₹37,900 a month before deductions, according to 2,500 salaries on AmbitionBox (updated 5 October 2026). Freshers usually start at ₹2.6 to 2.9 LPA, about ₹22,000 to ₹24,000 a month, and pay reaches ₹6 to 6.7 LPA at six to nine years. Senior PLC programmers with nine to twelve years report ₹9.1 to 10.7 LPA, and the small group past twelve years reports ₹13.9 to 20.6 LPA. The top 1% of PLC programmers earn over ₹9.9 LPA. The biggest jumps come from site commissioning, Siemens or Rockwell depth, and moving into a larger OEM or MNC, not from years alone.

These figures are self-reported, so treat them as a guide to the middle of the market rather than a promise. Below are the numbers by experience, city and employer type, where each one came from, and what actually moves your pay.

Where these numbers come from

I checked five salary sites in the first week of October 2026. They do not agree exactly, because each counts different people:

• AmbitionBox (PLC Programmer salaries): 2,500 salaries, updated 5 October 2026. Average ₹4.5 LPA. This is the largest Indian sample, so the tables below use it.
• Glassdoor India: average about ₹3.9 LPA, with the middle half between ₹2.7 and ₹5.9 LPA, seen October 2026.
• PayScale (PLC Programmer, India): average base ₹5.17 LPA from only 33 profiles, updated 26 March 2026. Entry level ₹1.95 LPA, early career ₹3.75 LPA.
• Indeed India (PLC Programmer salaries): ₹28,740 a month from 40 job postings, updated 8 May 2026, range ₹16,633 to ₹49,660 a month. This is what employers advertise, which tends to be lower than what experienced people report.

Two cautions. First, self-reported data skews: people with good offers post more often, and small samples (under 50 salaries) swing wildly. Second, every site quotes cost to company (CTC). Your monthly in-hand is lower once PF, professional tax and any income tax come out, so a ₹3 LPA CTC is closer to ₹23,000 to ₹24,000 in hand, depending on how the employer structures it.

AmbitionBox splits its data at 0 to 1, 1 to 3, 3 to 6 and 6 to 9 years. For nine years and above I used its "Senior PLC Programmer" title, which is what most people are called by then.

PLC programmer salary in India for freshers

The honest picture: ₹2.6 to 2.9 LPA is the middle, and many small system integrators pay less. Indeed's live listings in October 2026 included PLC programmer posts at ₹12,000 to ₹18,000 a month. AmbitionBox's own "PLC Trainee" title estimates ₹1.9 to 2.1 LPA in the first year. Those are real offers, and they are low because the employer is paying you to learn on their projects.

What raises a fresher offer is not a longer certificate list. It is being useful on day one: reading an electrical drawing, wiring and testing an I/O list, writing a clean ladder or structured text routine in TIA Portal or Studio 5000, and explaining a fault you actually found. A candidate who can do that in the interview is often offered the top of a company's band, or gets a graduate engineer trainee role at a larger firm, where AmbitionBox puts GET pay at ₹4.1 to 4.5 LPA.

PLC programmer salary in India after 10 years

By ten years, very few people are still called "PLC programmer". They become senior controls engineers, project leads or commissioning managers, and pay depends on which. AmbitionBox shows Senior PLC Programmer at ₹9.1 to 10.7 LPA (nine to twelve years) and Senior PLC Engineer at ₹8.5 to 9.4 LPA for the same band. Commissioning Engineer at nine to twelve years is ₹9.5 to 10.6 LPA, and ₹11.6 to 15.7 LPA after twelve years. Glassdoor's average for Senior PLC Programmer is about ₹7.5 LPA.

If you stay a pure programmer at the same small integrator, expect the lower end. If you lead projects, handle customers and sign off commissioning, the upper end and beyond is realistic.

PLC programmer highest salary in India

The top 1% of PLC programmers on AmbitionBox earn over ₹9.9 LPA, and the top 10% over ₹6.1 LPA. That ceiling is lower than many people expect because the title itself stops at mid-level. The highest numbers sit in the next roles up: AmbitionBox puts Automation Manager at an average of ₹20.7 LPA, with the top 1% above ₹48 LPA. Individual Senior PLC Programmer reports of ₹25 LPA at twelve years exist, but they are outliers, not the norm.

Indeed's posted-salary data points the same way: Bangalore ₹30,669 a month and Pune ₹30,274 a month were its two highest-paying cities for PLC programmers (May 2026 update). Bangalore pays slightly more, but rent eats most of the difference. Pune has by far the most PLC programmers reporting, which reflects its machine-builder and automotive base around Chakan, Pimpri Chinchwad and Talegaon.

Salary by employer type

AmbitionBox groups salaries by industry, which maps roughly to the kind of company you work for.

What this means in practice:

• System integrators hire the most freshers and pay the least at the start. You get the widest exposure: many brands, many industries, a lot of site work. Two or three years here is the fastest way to learn.
• OEMs (packaging, special-purpose machines, material handling) pay a little more and give you one platform in depth. Travel for installation is common.
• End-user plants (automotive, pharma, FMCG) pay more for steadier hours, but the work is mostly maintenance and small modifications rather than new programs.
• MNCs and their Indian engineering centres pay the most, and Siemens stands out at ₹9 to 11.4 LPA across one to eleven years. Entry is competitive and usually wants a degree plus proven project work. AmbitionBox does not separate global capability centres (GCCs) from the parent, so I have not quoted a separate GCC figure.

Skills and brands that move PLC programmer pay

The clearest evidence is to compare job titles at the same experience on AmbitionBox:

The pattern is consistent: the more responsibility for a running plant or a customer handover, the higher the pay. Specifically:

1. Commissioning and site work. Engineers who can take a machine from power-on to handover earn more, and site postings usually add a daily or travel allowance on top of CTC. Allowance rates vary a lot by company, so ask for the figure in writing before you accept; do not assume.
2. Siemens TIA Portal depth. It is the most requested platform in Indian listings. Knowing S7-1500, structured programming with FBs and data blocks, and diagnostics is worth more than knowing five brands lightly.
3. Rockwell Studio 5000. Important for US-linked OEMs and export machines. Siemens plus Rockwell is a strong combination.
4. Safety PLCs. Siemens F-CPUs, safety programming and the standards behind them are a short list few freshers have. Interviewers at larger firms ask about it.
5. SCADA and HMI. PayScale lists HMI and SCADA among the skills linked to higher PLC programmer pay. WinCC, Ignition and FactoryTalk are the common ones.

Gulf and abroad

Gulf data is thinner than people assume. PayScale's UAE page for Controls Engineer shows an average of AED 151,500 a year, but from only 14 profiles last updated in April 2024, so I would not plan around it. Gulf offers usually want three or more years of site commissioning experience and the right documents. The realistic route, including Germany, is in automation jobs abroad.

What actually raises your pay

If you are early in your career, in order of impact:

1. Get two years of genuine commissioning. It is the single biggest separator between ₹3 LPA and ₹6 LPA profiles.
2. Go deep in one major platform first, usually Siemens TIA Portal, then add Rockwell.
3. Keep a project record. Machine type, I/O count, PLC and HMI used, what you wrote, what failed and how you found it. That record wins the next offer.
4. Switch employer type once, deliberately. Integrator to OEM or MNC after two to four years is the most common jump.
5. Add safety or SCADA. Both are short to learn and rarely held by people at your level.

What is not worth paying for: certificates that list twenty brands without hands-on hours, or any course whose only outcome is a PDF.
