PLC Certification in India: Which Ones Count in 2026

The short answer

PLC certification in India is not one exam. It is a ladder of certificates with very different costs and very different weight. At the bottom are free online course certificates (₹0 to learn; an optional EDWartens certificate costs ₹459 to ₹959) and NPTEL's proctored exam (₹1,000). In the middle are government and skill-council certificates: an NSTI short course costs ₹1,000 a week, and NSQF qualifications such as Industrial Automation Technician are free under PMKVY. At the top sit vendor training and professional certifications: Rockwell Automation's 2026 India calendar lists Studio 5000 courses at ₹46,200 to ₹57,772 per course before tax, and ISA's CCST Level 1 exam costs US$331 for members and US$415 for non-members, after five years of combined education and experience. For a fresher, no certificate replaces a project you can demonstrate; for an engineer with three or more years, vendor certificates start to matter.

Prices below were taken from official pages on 5 October 2026.

The rest of this post explains each rung, what it costs, how an employer checks it and when it is worth your money. If your question is specifically whether a free certificate is worth adding to your CV, we covered that in are free PLC certificates worth anything in India. If you want to know what "CPD accredited" means, read CPD accreditation explained for Indian engineers. This post does not repeat those.

PLC certification online, free and paid

Searches for "PLC certification online free" usually lead to one of three things.

Free course certificates. On our platform, the learning is free: every module, the notes, the practice tasks and the final assessment cost ₹0. The only paid item is an optional EDWartens Certificate of Completion after you pass: ₹459 for beginner courses, ₹559 for intermediate and ₹959 for advanced, including GST. Other platforms work differently, and some charge for the assessment itself. Whatever the platform, an employer reads such a certificate as "this candidate studied the topic", which helps you get shortlisted for a fresher role but rarely decides the interview.

NPTEL. IIT Kharagpur's Industrial Automation and Control course on NPTEL is free to study, and the proctored exam is optional at ₹1,000. The certificate shows your score. It is theory-heavy (sensors, actuators, control, communication), so it complements PLC programming practice rather than replacing it.

Skill India Digital Hub and PMKVY. Under PMKVY 4.0, NSDC says training, assessment and certification cost the candidate nothing, and the certificate is digital. These are classroom courses at registered centres, not purely online, and only some centres run automation qualifications.

Government and skill-council certificates

NSQF qualifications: what the codes mean

India's National Qualifications Register lists each qualification with a code, a level and an awarding body. The two most relevant to PLC work:

  • Industrial Automation Technician (IAS/Q5601), NSQF Level 4, awarded by the Instrumentation, Automation, Surveillance and Communication (IASC) Sector Skill Council. The qualification file lists 390 hours of training, entry with 10th plus a one-year NTC or NAC, and a job of installing control panels and helping engineers commission them.
  • PLC Technician (Advanced), NSQF Level 5, awarded by the Indian Iron and Steel Sector Skill Council. Its qualification file, approved on 8 May 2025, covers developing, testing and commissioning PLC, HMI and SCADA programs over 570 hours.

Many students search for an Electronics Sector Skills Council (ESSCI) PLC certificate. ESSCI covers electronics manufacturing and hardware roles; the automation-specific qualifications we found on the register sit with IASC and, for steel plants, IISSSC. Check the code on the National Qualifications Register before you enrol anywhere that promises an "NSDC PLC certificate".

NSTI and MSME tool room certificates

NSTIs issue a certificate for their Advanced Vocational Training Scheme short courses. NSTI Bangalore's 2026-27 brochure lists a one-week Siemens S7-1200/1500 PLC and HMI course at ₹1,000 per week for private candidates plus ₹100 registration. CTTC Bhubaneswar, an MSME society, lists a one-month PLC course at ₹8,000 and a one-year Post Diploma in Industrial Automation and Robotics at ₹54,000 in its 2025-26 programme. These certificates carry the government's name, which helps with public-sector and maintenance employers, but a one-week course is still a one-week course. Employers will ask what you did in it.

Vendor certificates: Siemens and Rockwell

Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley)

Rockwell publishes an India calendar with prices. In the January to December 2026 calendar:

Rockwell course (2026, India)CodeDaysPrice per delegate, ex tax
Studio 5000 Logix Designer Level 1: ControlLogix Fundamentals and TroubleshootingCCP2995₹57,772
Studio 5000 Logix Designer Level 3: Project DevelopmentCCP1434₹46,200
FactoryTalk View ME and PanelView Plus ProgrammingCCV2044₹46,200
FactoryTalk View SE ProgrammingCCV2075₹57,772
PowerFlex 750-Series Configuration, Startup and TroubleshootingCCA182 + CCA1833₹38,500
EtherNet/IP Configuration and TroubleshootingCCP1833₹38,500

The prices apply at Rockwell's authorised venue in Noida, exclude taxes such as GST, and classes start only when six or more people enrol. In practice, most engineers who hold these certificates had their employer pay. That is the normal route: join a plant or integrator that runs Allen-Bradley, then ask to be nominated.

Siemens SITRAIN

Siemens runs its official training through SITRAIN India, based at Kalwa near Airoli. India prices are quoted per course rather than published in a public list we could find. For scale, the same five-day TIA Portal Programming 1 course (TIA-PRO1) was listed at DKK 16,695 on Siemens' Denmark SITRAIN page on 5 October 2026. Siemens also runs a "Siemens Certified Programmer" exam in some countries, with TIA Programming 1, 2 and 3 as prerequisites and a practical hands-on test. Ask SITRAIN India whether it is scheduled locally before you plan around it.

A SITRAIN or Rockwell certificate tells an employer that you sat through the vendor's own syllabus on the vendor's own hardware. That carries weight with system integrators, because it reduces the training they must do. It does not prove you can troubleshoot a line at 2 am, which is why interviewers still ask practical questions.

ISA CCST and CAP: for later in your career

The International Society of Automation's certifications are experience-gated. From ISA's exam pages, checked 5 October 2026:

  • CCST Level 1: five years of combined education and experience; exam US$331 (members) or US$415 (non-members).
  • CCST Level 2: seven years; US$315 or US$397.
  • CCST Level 3: 13 years; US$331 or US$415.
  • CAP: five years of automation work with a four-year degree (7,500 documented hours), or ten years without; US$373 or US$467.

Testing is online or at a test centre. These are worth considering when you are aiming at process plants, oil and gas or companies with American clients. They are not for freshers, and nobody in India expects a junior engineer to hold one.

How employers verify a PLC certificate

  • NSQF and PMKVY certificates are digital and carry a QR code or certificate number that can be checked through Skill India Digital Hub or DigiLocker.
  • Vendor certificates carry a course code and dates. A hiring manager who doubts one will email the training centre or simply ask you about the course content.
  • Institute certificates are checked by calling the institute and, more often, by asking you to explain a project from the course.
  • Experience is checked through a relieving letter and a reference call. For most Indian hiring managers, a six-month experience certificate from a real automation company outweighs every certificate in the table above.

Which PLC certificate to get at which career stage

  1. Student or fresher: free online courses plus two portfolio projects; certificates optional.
  2. Before the first interview: one hands-on course on real hardware, government or private.
  3. First job, 0 to 2 years: ask your employer to sponsor vendor training on the brand you use.
  4. 2 to 5 years: Siemens or Rockwell advanced courses; NSQF Level 5 if your sector asks for it.
  5. 5 years and above: ISA CCST or CAP if you target process or export-facing companies.

The pattern is simple: pay little for certificates early, and let employers pay for expensive vendor training once you are hired. What gets you hired in the first place is evidence of work. Our guide to portfolio projects that get interviews is more useful at the fresher stage than any certificate, and if you are still choosing a first brand, see Siemens or Allen-Bradley: which to learn first.

Where EDWartens certificates sit

Our free courses, such as Siemens TIA Portal in Three Hours and Allen-Bradley Studio 5000, sit on the first rung: free to learn, with an optional paid certificate. The Automation Engineer Program sits higher: it is a classroom programme in Electronic City covering 20 PLC brands plus SCADA, HMI and drives, CPD (UK) accredited, run by an ISO 9001:2015 certified institute, and candidates join as junior engineers and receive an experience certificate from Wartens. That experience certificate is the document employers tend to weigh most. It also carries a written job guarantee with a full fee refund if you complete every phase and are not placed, conditions apply under our placement policy. For the classroom option in the city, see our page on PLC training in Bangalore.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is the best PLC certification in India for a fresher?
A: There is no single best one. For a fresher, a free or low-cost certificate plus two projects you can explain beats an expensive certificate with nothing behind it. Add one hands-on course on real hardware, such as a one-week NSTI course at ₹1,000 per week, before interviews.

Q: How much does PLC certification cost in India?
A: From ₹0 to well over ₹50,000. Free online courses cost nothing to learn, NPTEL's exam is ₹1,000, NSTI short courses are ₹1,000 per week, and Rockwell's official Studio 5000 courses cost ₹46,200 to ₹57,772 per course before GST in 2026.

Q: Is there a free PLC certification online?
A: Yes. EDWartens free courses cost ₹0 to learn, including the final assessment, with an optional certificate at ₹459 to ₹959. PMKVY skill-council certificates are also free to the candidate but need classroom attendance at a registered centre.

Q: Can I take the Siemens certification exam in India?
A: Siemens runs a Certified Programmer exam in some countries, with TIA Programming 1, 2 and 3 as prerequisites. Ask SITRAIN India directly whether it is scheduled locally. Most Indian engineers hold SITRAIN course certificates rather than the exam.

Q: Do employers verify PLC certificates?
A: Digital NSQF and PMKVY certificates can be checked by QR code or certificate number. For other certificates, employers mostly verify by questioning you on the content, so only list courses you can discuss in detail.

Q: When should I consider ISA CCST or CAP?
A: After about five years of work. CCST Level 1 needs five years of combined education and experience, and CAP needs five years in automation with a degree. Both cost several hundred US dollars per exam.
